CHAPTER NINE

Ah! There it was again. The hollow thump, thump, thump was coming from inside our wall. What in the world could be in there? I waved at Olivia and pointed at the wall beside the tapestry. She nodded and came closer. “I already checked behind there for a hidden passage,” she whispered.

Drew scoffed. “I looked there the first day.”

At least it wasn't another ghost ready to possess one of us. Well, it could’ve been, but I doubted it since the banging sounded like something or someone, possibly, was stuck in the wall. Ghosts could’ve just gone through it.

Drew, Olivia, and I pushed against the wall where the noise was coming from, poking and prodding on the crown molding, and the baseboards, and tugging on the light sconces. “It would be something old, original to the house,” Olivia said. “The secret entrance won’t be in a modern electric light.

I eyeballed the fireplace mantle across the room. “Possibly it’s not something close?” I hurried over and began prodding away at the intricately carved mantle.

Sure enough, the inner circle of a little flower depressed with just a little bit of pressure. After a couple of seconds, a secret door popped open on the other side of the exit door, several feet away from where we’d been searching.

A stale, dank musty smell, like an airless, damp basement, came with it. We peered into the dark, creepy passage, which went in the direction of the original thumps we’d heard.

I shrieked when something came rushing toward us, and everyone jumped back as Lucy-Fur and Snoozer came running out.

"We've been yelling for you for hours!" Lucy said in almost a growl.

I gaped at my incredibly spoiled, cute-but-so-bad cats. "How in all the heavens did you get in there?"

Lucy tossed her snow-white head back haughtily. "We came through the portal earlier, when you weren't here and decided to have a nap on that amazing bed while we waited.

I felt the urge for a moment of private time, so I went looking for a litter box and found a passage.” She glared at Snoozer. “I don’t know how he opened it, but I know it was him.”

“Was he up on the mantle?” Drew asked.

Snoozer licked his paw delicately. He loved being up high.

“Yes,” Lucy said darkly. "Right after I went into the passage, he ran in behind me. Somehow the door shut behind us, and we were stuck."

“What did you find?” I asked. “Where does it go?”

Lucy gave me a disdainful look. “Do I look stupid to you? Do I look like a complete idiot? Do you think for one second that I would stray away from the opening we came in? The moment we went any further down the passage we would’ve ended up getting lost.” She huffed, and it sounded suspiciously like a hiss. “We stayed right by the door until we heard you lot come back from wherever you’d been enjoying yourselves.” Man, her voice dripped with venom.

“Well, heck. I want to see where it goes!” Olivia jumped up and down on the balls of her feet.
